Animated Arab Movies: The 64th episode of the series animated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel, ‘Watchmen: Chapter II’, manages to keep the viewer engrossed in the detailed universe of the titular characters’ usually distorted and utterly complicated moral outlook. The director is Brandon Vietti and the script is penned by J. Michael Straczynski. As this film is anime-backed, it quite brilliantly adapts the second half of the comic book perfectly. In terms of voice acting and visuals, the film has more than paid attention to the philosophical themes of the comic which are very dark while being animated in content too.

Synopsis

Another dystopian event takes place a year after the first episode in ’Watchmen’, depicting 1985. However, in this episode superheroes have been banned completely – the song and dance explores the idea that the creative premise outlines a beautiful story and thus this episode focuses more on the outer material to develop the plot. Who remains? Rorschach investigates the mystery of Comedian’s death – however, it is not before he is accused, forcing him into arrest surprisingly later on after discovering information about his ‘criminal master.’ The situation between the heroes is not the best either:

In ‘Watchmen II’, for example, Dr. Manhattan reminisces about the beautiful life on earth, deciding to self-exile on Mars instead of helping the world fight its seminal problems.

Laurie Juspeczyk on the other hand seems content with her love life with Dan Dreiberg beating the former Nite Owl threatening her participation with the team.

Adrian Veidt who is famous for his intelligence, however, lacks a ‘stage name’ and so he fosters his primitive anti-nationalism and distaste to successfully become world diplomacy in a heretical sense.

In a tragic turn, because Veidt’s actual plan was to save mankind from nuclear annihilation, his actions in the end became completely justified. The focus was never on whether he was indeed a villain – more questions arise regarding the people and the respect for his vision. Unlike its live action adaptation today, this film sticks to the original graphic novel plot because the world looks over the straight up fear of an alien invasion in order too force unity among all countries.

The Director, Vietti Brandon, delivers on a perfect cater to audience showdown.

The voice actors

  • Rorschach temple Elisa Welliver: With his hoarse voice, he sounds just like Rorschach – a tough, unwavering man.
  • Dr. Manhattan Michael Cerveris: Cerveris is ideal for this part, however detached a god-like character, he maintains a mesmerizing aura.
  • Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl played by Matthew Rhys: Matthew plays internal conflicts in Nite Owl and his desire to be a superhero.
  • Katee Sackhoff as Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre II: she plays purposefully the element of disparity, which had to carry this second generation hero.
  • Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias portrayed by Troy Baker. Ozymandias speaks in a peaceful yet very unsettling way.

In terms of production value, the animation team deserves a commendation for their efforts in replicating the iconic disks of Dave Gibbons and capturing the dark and gritty tones of the graphic novel as regards the animation style.

Animation and Visuals

The film’s style takes on a darker mature anime cut – that closely relates to the line art and the noir of the piece created by Gibbons. This ranged from the cold emptiness of Dr. Manhattan’s Mars to the washed down images of the New York City scenes switching from one location to the other is highly intriguing.

The fight scenes in this case stand out for impressive choreography and smooth execution making some of the finest moments in the movie including the prison break and the final fight at Veidt’s seiuere base. Colors have been occasionally employed to good effect especially in the scenes on Earth where the colors are dull, and then they are vibrant at the time when Dr. Michatn is on Mars which emphasizes his other world nature as a superhero.

Themes and Philosophy

In ‘Watchmen: Chapter II’, there are so deep philosophical examinations power, ethics and the human experience. On one hand, Dr. Manhattan’s alienation from humanity is counterpoised with Rorschach’s radical black and white view. At the same time, the metaphoric Soviet trauma is revealed through personal discoveries of Laurie about her mother – it is more encompassing trauma over the history and its integration for the purposes of the future.

Adrian Veidt’s elaborate plan calls into question the classical ethical position of utilitarianism as opposed to deontological theories. His act of sacrificing millions for the sake of ‘the majority’ invites the audience to accept the harsh truth of the compromises of a realistic hero compared to an idealistic one.

Most of the critics received positively ‘Watchmen: Chapter II’ for the loyalty to the original material.

IGN said it was “one of the most substantial entries in the DC animated catalog content,” and he as well as many others was pleased when finally watching this film.

Kakuchopurei pointed out that the animated version was able to restore the original ending, thus depicting the comic book accurately unlike the movie adaptation.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the rating stands at 92%, the reviews of the audience stressing the quality of the story and the artwork segmentation.

A common thread running through all the reviews was the possibility that the adaptation’s close adherence to original material could deter those who are new to the graphic novel. The book’s philosophical debates and its chronologically discontinuous narratives are both elements that require the viewer’s time and concentration and may leave some fans out of the target audience.

Comparison to the Live-Action Adaptation
