Story: Nobita’s grandmother is taken back to meet her grandson by his trusted cat-robot companion, philosopher and guide Doraemon. Unfortunately, the old woman wants to see her granddaughter-in-law but this visit will be accompanied by a range of unpredictable incidents.
Review: When it comes to anything involving Doraemon, outright bad can never be. Considered with respect to what has happened before it either pales or equals its predecessors in terms of quality. Thus ‘Stand By Me Doraemon 2’ is also a mixed bag of so many things and ends up being perfect, as good as or not inferior in some parts as the franchise has always been. This time Nobi who already ‘fixed’ his future by marrying Shizuka (Yumi Kakazu) messes everything up by desiring to go backwards again. Well, he means well since poor thing just want to see his lovely grandma who dotes on him so much – feeling every child that has ever known the pure love of grandparents. Therefore, Doraemon casts his spell and there we are: they meet! Of course from now on story tells that we are only going deeper into trouble and Nobi will take us through another emotional rollercoaster ride including some adventures. But?
Directors Ryuichi Yagi and Takashi Yamazaki (also the writer): keep the essential spirit and innocence of Doraemon series intact; as always, it is complicated but not confusing; emotions are universal while storytelling simple enough for children at all ages to keep them engrossed in it; those keen on nostalgia have something worth rooting for others can find occasional excitement in its action-packed pranks otherwise far too verbose despite maturing over time maybe such classic franchises could still make wonders with today’s animation tools at our disposal just wish this was done more often since execution becomes way too wordy this time which has changed with years but such timeless franchises would be at their best in wooing the spectators. In that sense, ‘Stand by Me Doraemon 2’ is quite tamed and doesn’t go for continuous action.
However, it makes up with a high emotional quotient. The film follows a trajectory from childhood to adulthood which is well crafted and it’s adorable to see Nobi’s love for Shizuka which propels his actions. The movie’s animation that shows future scenes looks kind of futuristic and new-fashioned. Background score is always soft and mellifluous when it plays.
